The Mendenhall Glacier The Mendenhall Glacier is a tongue of ice stretching 12 miles from the Juneau Icefield to Mendenhall Lake. You can't get close it as the tongue terminates in the lake. A 15 minutes of easy walking along the trail will bring you closer to the glacier, but far from enough. Blue icebergs float in Mendenhall Lake as they break off the glacier, reminding us of the constant and natural process of change.
This is the Visitor's centre. Thanks to the driver and her mistake, there was no time to visit here.
At the end of the trail stands Nugget Falls, which is a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mendenhall Glacier. The view of the 377-foot waterfall with the glacier in the background is breathtaking – and it is as close as you can get to the glacier short of taking a tour to actually walk on it.
